LUMIA won the Harju County Library interior architecture competition
The Harju County Library, located in Keila, sought a new concept for its spaces through an interior architecture competition. LUMIA’s design Raamaturing (Book Circle) won the 1st place!
Libraries play a highly democratic role in society, ensuring equal access for all social groups. Over time, libraries have evolved, and LUMIA’s concept is driven by the idea of a multifunctional space where people feel comfortable, can engage in activities of their choice, and are not pressured to consume anything.
At the heart of the spatial concept are books, placed on both high and low shelves to ensure accessibility for different user groups. The centrepiece of the library is the Enn Soosaar Library, designed as a distinct room where visitors feel as if they have stepped into a cosy living room. Throughout the library, various reading and relaxation areas of different sizes provide spaces for reading, resting, or deep concentration. The interiors feature natural and soft tones, creating a calm and welcoming atmosphere for all activities.
We are delighted that the LUMIA team has the opportunity to work with such a significant and exciting spatial typology as libraries.
